Primary Function

Plan, organize, and direct the University-sponsored volleyball program.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

1. Instruct student-athletes individually or in groups in techniques of volleyball.
2. Organize and execute effective team practice and coaching.
3. Assess volleyball players’ skills and assign team positions.
4. Evaluate own and opposing team capabilities to determine winning game strategy.
5. Participate in scheduling, planning, and travel arrangements for away competition.
6. Identify, evaluate, and encourage application and acceptance of student athletes in accordance with University, NCAA, and SAA policies and regulations.
7. Monitor team budget; purchase and ensure maintenance of volleyball equipment and uniforms
8. Effectively manage and evaluate assistant coach.
9. Participate in speaking engagements for the Sewanee Club and support community initiatives.
10. Instruct physical education course and perform collateral departmental duties as required.

Judgment Required Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.
Budgetary Responsibility Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.

Job Specifications/Position Qualifications (minimum)


Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related field


3 – 5 years coaching experience at high school or collegiate level or experience competing as an athlete at the collegiate level

Job Related Skills

Knowledge of NCAA rules & regulations


Valid Tennessee Driver’s license; NCAA Compliance certification

Daily; recruiting, conducting campus visits, instructing physical education classes, coaching


Periodic; addressing student athletes’ schedule problems, academic problems, or personal issues; collaborate with Office of Admissions in recruiting efforts.


Periodic; scheduling events/competitions with other institutions, communicating with parents of student athletes, alumni groups, and media

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervision Received This position receives general supervision. Broad instructions are provided and the staff member uses judgment and experience to carry out assignments. Completed assignments and finished products are reviewed by supervisor after completion.
