Primary Function

This position makes decisions in consultation with the farm manager regarding all parts of vegetable production, vegetable packing and animal care, and then executes and tracks progress on these areas. It includes scheduling and leading crews of students, volunteers and visitors and ensuring their safety and training in daily farm maintenance tasks like animal care, plant care, mowing, and organizing tools. This position initiates repairs to infrastructure and equipment and tracks progress on these projects; it assigns overflow work-study or volunteers for unexpected events. It assesses ecosystem nutrient cycling and a variety of farm process functions and troubleshoots problems. This position includes public contact several times a week and represents the University during visitor events at the farm.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

Foster farm-based student learning and personal development in collaboration with relevant academic, sustainability, and co-curricular departments.
Assist with organic-approved grower program, including maintenance and propagation of edibles and pollinator-friendly perennials—assuring the cultivation of plants for course-related garden demonstration, produce and plant sales, community education, and research use. Assists with data entry in online organic record keeping system.
Assist with scheduling and supervision of farm projects and coordinates the activities of student hourly employees’ and volunteers’ work schedules.
Assist with all aspects of composting to ensure safe and effective operations, including hauling of food waste, shredding, mixing, aerating, attending to insect larva, data recording of time, temperature, age and GIS deposition tracking.
Assist with animal rearing, assuring the health of ruminants, poultry and fish for course-related farm demonstration, livestock and meat sales, community education, and research use.
Assist with tracking of organic certification processes in gardens, greenhouses and tracking of animal health maintenance, as well as information about success of community and student engagement.
Coordinate with personnel in Facilities Management, and the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability and faculty to ensure all activities meet campus standards and expectations regarding appearance, accessibility and safety.
Recommend, maintain, and purchase farm supplies and equipment, including use of farm truck to purchase materials and supplies when needed.
Maintain and builds fences and small buildings, using common power tools and hand tools.

Judgment Required Judgment and discretion as to the use of established policies are required to perform the essential duties of this position.
Budgetary Responsibility Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.

Tractor and 3-point hitch implements, Truck and trailer, tiller, mower, chain saw, string trimmer, garden hand tools and carpentry power tools

Job Specifications/Position Qualifications (minimum)


Associate degree in Crop Science, Entomology, Horticulture, Ecology, Biology or a related field, or 2 years of related coursework in postsecondary education, B.S. preferred.


3 years of full time vegetable growing experience; a general knowledge of plant identification and nomenclature and knowledge of grounds and garden maintenance and animal husbandry

Job Related Skills

Demonstrated oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with a diverse clientele. Familiar with smartphone technology and google docs, sheet and calendar and drive.

Preferred: Demonstrated interest in applied entomology and mycology, especially insect and disease scouting and identification, as well as the rearing of beneficial insects and edible mushrooms. Permaculture design certificate. Experience with basic budgeting, data tracking, and reporting, and experience in a startup environment. Operates a manual transmission tractor with implements and can back a trailer.

Work Environment

Working Environment

The farm is a startup operation with fast paced changes in work routines and infrastructure. A high level of flexibility, curiosity and drive are needed. The assistant farm manager will work a flexible schedule in response to the needs of animals and crops and work schedules are often driven by weather events. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required and there will also be on-call during some off hours. A typical workweek is 40 hours.
